The Saskatchewan Advantage

Authority

Provided under the authority of The Fuel Tax Regulations, 2000.

Basis

Assists Saskatchewan service station owners and bulk fuel dealers located along the Alberta and Manitoba borders to compete with their Alberta and Manitoba counterparts by providing a "commission" for gasoline and propane sold.

Rate

Commissions received vary according to the distance from the nearest out-of-province competition as follows:

  • 100% of the tax differential between Alberta/Manitoba and Saskatchewan for fuel dealers located in Lloydminster and Onion Lake (Zone A) and Flin Flon and Creighton (Zone D).

  • 50% of the tax differential between Alberta and Saskatchewan for fuel dealers located within 24 km of the nearest Alberta fuel dealer (Zone B). Fuel dealers in Denare Beach (Zone E) are eligible for assistance of 50% of the tax difference between Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

  • 25% of the tax differential between Alberta and Saskatchewan for fuel dealers located between 24 km and 56 km from the nearest Alberta fuel dealer (Zone C).

International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)

Carriers operating in Saskatchewan are required to pay tax on the fuel consumed in the Province. This is done under the provisions of the International Fuel tax Agreement (IFTA).
